Hobbies

Have you had to change any of your hobbies since being diagnosed with epilepsy?

Which ones? Do you have a new hobby or make changes to one you previously enjoyed? Tell us more in the comments below!

  1. Honey bee keeping. The bee experts saw me have a 20 second or so Absence Seizure. They decided I could contract/rent a hive to them in my yard in exchange for 10% of honey. Really, I just wanted to have tea with the queen (outdoors drinking ice tea and watching bees go and come)

    1. it sounds like you have a love for nature and the outdoors. I am so glad you have these hobbies. I too love being outside and trying to grow my garden 😀 Jill (Team Member)

    2. kind words and I thank you!

  2. No. Just regular cross stitching material. But the eye strain makes me go dizzy, even if I use something to make it look bigger.
I was working on a picture of The Beatles. Wanted to enter it into the fair. But I haven't done it in almost a year. All I do now is play games on my phone and read the news, but even that can make me dizzy too.

    1. I used to wear contacts. But I fell asleep with them on a few times. Bright light hurts my eyes too. I have dark tone glasses that stay one tone. I use sunglasses that I place over my glasses.
I also make it so the background of the screen is dark with white writing. I adjust the brightness and contrast. I use an antiglare screen on the computer monitor, and a piece or anti glare over my phone screen.
I enlarge the writing. But there's just some things that we can't make larger.
Another thing that can make me have a seizure is sound sensitivity. My roommate thinks I can control my nerves. But only my mind does that. Heck, it takes me 2 hours to get to sleep when I turn out the lights.

    2. I hear you! I forget at times to take mine out as well. It sounds like you’re taking all the available precautions. You’re absolutely right, there are some things that are just completely out of our control. I’m sorry your roommate doesn’t always understand though! I hope you’re able to get a good night sleep tonight. All my best, Julie (team member)

  3. Doctor recommends 2 hours of gaming time, but I haven't had a Seizure since 3/7/25 so I played all the time.

    1. what kind of gaming do you enjoy? I am glad to hear you haven't had a seizure in two months, that is great news. Jill (Team Member)

  4. I had planned to be an elementary teacher but ended up on disability after 4 status seizures in 14 months. Once Covid hit I decreased volunteering as I catch everything. However, I do the prayer chain in our church, pray with people, and love encouraging others with calls and cards. I also love spending time with my family , going to concerts, and attending sporting events as well as going on walks while listening to music. Reading is also great!

    1. I just saw Jeremy Camp on May 9th which was awesome and took in some minor league games in Springfield, MO plus got time with family! Sure will take in more games this summer. I also seek autographs of prospects or favorite players and got some cards signed in Springfield!

    2. bonus getting to spend time with family! That sounds like some really fun times☺️. Julie (team member)
