Could it be a 'small' seizure?

Hiya, I hope this doesn't sound too silly! I was diagnosed with epilepsy 12 years ago - i only have tonic clonic seizures, no aura or warning - they're managed by lamotrigine but I've had breakthrough seizures when I was pregnant and when I forgot to take my meds (stupidly).

Today I was in bed just feeling tired and must have fallen asleep. I woke up an hour or so later with blood on my hand and pillow, which has come from me chewing the inside of my cheek quite badly. My immediate thought was a seizure, but I feel normal now. Usually I'm super confused even after the post ictal phase and 'know' I've had one. Also my husband says he can tell fire to how I act. I then am generally very tired and need to sleep, which u believe is quite normal. My question is, is it possible to not have this confusion/tiredness after a seizure if its somehow less severe, whilst still a tonic clonic? Or perhaps I've just bitten my cheek in my sleep and am being paranoid! Sorry for the long post and thank you for reading. Any insight is appreciated. (I'm 40yo female btw)

  1. My wife has focal impaired awareness seizures (temporal lobe) which last anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes. If her seizure is under a minute, she recovers almost immediately, without any confusion. If they are longer, say closer to 3 minutes, then she has 5 to 10 minutes of postictal silence, followed by sudden concern, then another 30+ minutes of confusion. After one of the short, 30 second seizures, she usually thinks she didn't lose awareness, but I always recall something that occurred within that timeframe that she doesn't remember, so she then agrees that she was unaware briefly.

    1. Sorry for the typos should be "from" not fire!

      1. hi, since we are all different, I think it can depend on the person. I would definitely talk to your doctor about this, if you haven't done so already, to get their opinion. They would know your medical history best. Please keep us posted on what you find out. Jill (Team Member)
