Psilocybin and Epilepsy

**Initial disclaimer** This topic is not meant to support or encourage the intake or abuse of illicit substances. Always consult your medical provider and adhere to local or federal laws.

I was diagnosed with a form of idiopathic generalized epilepsy about ~13 years ago. I was 14 when I had my first tonic-clonic seizure, and am now 27(F). I’ve experienced off-and-on seizure activity including absence and tonic-clonic episodes, often being seizure-free for multiple years between (it’s been over 2 years since my last one).
I’ve recently been approached by a group of friends about their interest in taking psilocybin (“magic mushrooms”). While I’m not interested in partaking due to a multitude of personal health factors, it got me thinking about how a psychedelic drug would behave in someone with an epileptic condition / with anticonvulsants, or other prescription drugs that alter the nervous system.
Would anyone be willing to share their thoughts or experiences?
Thank you!

  1. Yes! Exactly as Natalie mentioned, consulting with your doctor and care team will be the best recommendation here. Definitely check in with them and see if this will be a suitable option for you. Wishing you all the best! Warmly, Kailah (Team Member)

    1. Hello there, according to some studies and fact sheets, even drugs which are considered to be 'natural' such as cannabis or magic mushrooms can often trigger seizures. Your physician or Neurologist will have accurate information and/or details related to your questions. - Warmly, Natalie Y. B. (Team Moderator)
