Is it a seizure?

Our 7yr old son recently has been having spells where he will become suddenly very stiff, his legs will lock his arms will go straight and stiff he is shaking some and sounds like he's trying to breath hard. He will do this for about 30seconds to a minute and a half then he will suddenly just let go and relax then come back like nothing happened. He wont remember anything that happened.

Sometimes he does this sitting up, sometimes he says he can feel it coming on and lays on the floor before it starts. This peaked in summer with one day having 8 episodes in a row.

We took him to a neurologist, had a MRI done which showed a right frontal lobe DVA but nothing else.

They did a 24hr video EEG but the whole two weeks before this he had zero episodes, he did nothing during the EEG either. They came back and said the EEG was "normal".

We showed the neuro video of this happening, and all we got back was "The EEG was normal" and referred us to a neuro behavioral specialist... it feels like they think this is either not happening or we're making it up?

His school is demanding answers because he's went to the floor multiple times so far this year shaking stiff and making gasping noises. We're not sure what to do now that the Neuro said the EEG is normal.....

any ideas? I've seen videos on youtube of kids doing the same exact thing he's doing saying their kids have seizures.

is exactly what he does....

I'm at a loss on what to do...

  1. Yes, please let us know what happens next. I will keep your son in my prayers.

    1. Hi I can understand why you would be at a loss. Did you reach out to the neuro behaviorial specialist? I would be curious to know what they think as they can perform different evaluations on your son. Also, I would consider a second opinion from a different neurologist. I would also talk to his school and let them know you are trying to get answers and see if they have any recommendations as well. Please keep us posted! Jill (Team Member)
