What has been your most embarrassing epilepsy moment?
Awkward moments can be hard to open up about, but sharing can help us see we are not alone in these experiences.
My first one made a lot of guys mad at me in my junior year in highschool in 2001. I lost control of my body and started to fall head first towards the concrete floor. I woke up on a stretcher and I was spacy until I found out that one of the hottest girls in our school chest prevented my head from cracking on the floor. I begged her for forgiveness when I went back to school. She was happy that I didn't get hurt or worse.
Most recently - having a seizure on a train while on the way to a minibreak my mother had kindly organised as quality bonding time, coming around to see that the train had been held at a station and two paramedics had come on to check I was alright. Was cringing enough even through intense post-seizure disorientation at having held up potentially 100+ people on their journeys (and the usual humiliation at it being in public), to insist I was 100% fine.
We then got to the hotel, I had a lie down in the room I was sharing with my mum, had another seizure and wet myself.
Needless to say, little bonding was done.
Asking about sounds during or after the complex partial seizure reminds me why I should stop doing that. I would ask if it sounds like an orgasm or performing an exorcism sometimes it did or some of my nonsense phrases.
It occasionally happened at appointments, but this one in particular waiting for EEG results.
Yes, I was rambling nonsense. When going to the room and the one phrase not verbatim. My neurologist told me I said something about a pizza cutter and circumcision. Keep in mind. I’m a woman and he is a man.
He was not upset. Has a sense of humor and his own daughter has epilepsy. Years later, I can laugh it off now, but still.
There were other ones like food all over the place at a restaurant or having sex with my husband those kinds stand out the most.
My most embarrassing moment was being at a friend party and had a seizure once I become aware had a few people just looking at me and my friend taking me to the bathroom because I wet myself. I hate these so much 😒
I have done the same thing and have learned who my true friends are the most embarrassed time for me was in 1964 so I expect long before most of you were born!
I was 16yrs of age and had experienced seizures since I was 8 yrs of age due to measles.
I was in a cafeteria having a meal with my parents while in Spain.
At that time I was having, what was then termed as, gran mals seizures but always with a warning beforehand.
When these appeared in public I would slowly head for the toilet which was what happened while in the cafeteria. I was just walking to the toilet when a waiter passed me and for some reason I lightly took hold of him as I was about to fall. When I fell, the waiter fell on top of me and then all the food he was carrying fell on top of us!
