Can Lithium medication cause seizures

I was put on 1000mg Lithium medication for Bipolar Affective Disorder and I had a tonic clinic seizure on my way to visit my Aunt’s. I bit my lip, had two black eyes and had a large bump and bleeding forehead and was rushed to A&E at the back of an ambulance and had to have a CT Scan. My gynaecologist said it was probably the Lithium I was on that caused the seizure but that’s not my first time experiencing a tonic clinic seizure as I’ve had a provoked one and a second unprovoked one that happened before this third one. So is it epilepsy or just the medication?

  1. Hello I am sorry to hear about your experience and I hope you are on your way in this journey. Thank you for your post. I feel like I have been in the same position because I never experienced an unprovoked seizure but as a child I took the medication.
I wish I had your courage to question doctors a long time ago.
Please friend make sure you have doctors that listen. Try to keep a note of everything that happens during your seizure should you have anymore.
I’ve learned the hard way about this condition so please make sure you have a clear diagnosis.
I have never experienced epilepsy the way it has affected so many people.
    I believe I was mis-diagnosed after 1 seizure from a head injury.
All tests (EEG,Cat Scans) were negative.
Please Advocate for yourself. Diligently research. Take care

    1. Hi I am so glad you reached out. I am sure these experiences were very scary for you. We are not medical professionals, so I would not want to steer you in the wrong direction. I would definitely ask your doctor about your medications and see what they think may be the cause of this. In the meantime, I am sending over this article with further information about tonic clonic seizures, I hope this is helpful: https://www.epilepsy.com/what-is-epilepsy/seizure-types/tonic-clonic-seizures.
