First Seizure at 50

My first seizure

I had my first seizure when I was 50 years old. I was told it might have been caused by a terrible fall I had, although the neurologist could not confirm that was the cause.

It started with me watching TV and hearing the same thing over and over. I also found myself reading the same thing repeatedly on a page. I had no idea why this was happening, and, at first, it only occurred once in a while.

This or That

Was your epilepsy caused by a head or brain injury?

Progression to tonic-clonic seizures

A year later, I had a tonic-clonic seizure. It took a few years to find a medication that worked for me. I was on Keppra (and still am) for a year, but the seizures kept happening. I was eventually told that nothing else could be done.

Exploring surgical options

The neurologist offered me an appointment with a specialist who performed surgery on patients with seizures that could not be controlled. After learning about the surgery, I decided to go ahead with it.

Life after surgery

This was 13 years ago. Since the surgery, I have not had any seizures. I do sometimes forget words, which was something I was told could happen, but it is much better than having seizures!
